Drake’s Legal Team Issues Statement Hours Before Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Halftime Show Performance Over Controversial Track ‘Not Like Us’

Drake’s legal team has issued a strongly worded statement just hours before Kendrick Lamar’s highly anticipated Super Bowl Halftime show performance on Sunday, February 9, 2025. The statement addresses ongoing legal disputes involving Lamar’s track Not Like Us, a diss song that has sparked controversy and drawn the attention of the public and media.

The Canadian rapper, Drake, is currently entangled in a high-profile legal battle with Universal Music Group (UMG), the label to which Kendrick Lamar is also signed. This legal clash revolves around allegations that UMG has “illegally inflated” streaming numbers for the song Not Like Us, which is at the center of their ongoing feud. The accusations claim that UMG manipulated the track’s streaming data to artificially boost its popularity.

In addition to this, Drake’s legal team has filed a separate lawsuit accusing Lamar of defamation due to the lyrics of Not Like Us. The lawsuit states that Lamar’s song falsely accuses Drake of being a sex offender, engaging in pedophilic acts, harboring sex offenders, and committing other criminal sexual offenses. The legal team further argues that the lyrics of the song go beyond typical diss track banter and are damaging to Drake’s personal and professional reputation.

Not Like Us was released in May 2024 amid an ongoing public feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar. During this period, the two artists exchanged numerous diss tracks, each laced with intense accusations aimed at one another. The track became one of the most talked-about songs of the year, adding fuel to an already explosive rivalry.

Earlier in April 2024, Drake found himself in another legal dispute when Tupac Shakur’s estate forced him to remove his diss track Taylor Made Freestyle from streaming platforms. The reason? The track featured an AI-generated voice that mimicked the late rapper’s iconic style. This controversy added another layer to the tense relationship between Drake, Lamar, and the estate of Tupac.

While it seems Kendrick Lamar has emerged victorious in this public feud, with Not Like Us recently winning three GRAMMY Awards during the 2025 ceremony, Drake’s legal action against UMG has not been deterred. The rapper’s legal team continues to pursue the case, claiming that UMG has not acted in the best interest of its artists.

Ahead of Kendrick Lamar’s performance at the Super Bowl 2025, Drake’s legal team took to the press to express their anger over UMG’s involvement in the feud. In the statement, they accused UMG of “masquerading as a champion of artistic freedom” by downplaying the serious nature of the situation and calling it “entertainment.” They firmly stated that there is nothing entertaining about the harmful accusations made in Lamar’s song, particularly the references to pedophilia and child abuse.

“We are confident that the evidence we will ultimately present at trial—including information we’ve already learned and continue to receive since filing the lawsuit—will expose UMG’s gross prioritization of its own corporate profits and executive bonuses over its exclusively signed artists’ well-being and the truth,” the statement reads.

As fans eagerly anticipate Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl performance, the legal battles between Drake and Lamar continue to make headlines. Watch for the drama to unfold both in the courtroom and on the stage as Lamar performs Not Like Us during the 2025 Super Bowl Halftime Show.
