Marvel’s First Family Makes Their Grand Entrance into the MCU with The Fantastic Four: First Steps Trailer

The long-awaited debut of Marvel’s First Family in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has finally arrived. The highly anticipated trailer for The Fantastic Four: First Steps has dropped, offering fans an exciting first look at the iconic superhero team. Set in a visually stunning retro-futuristic 1960s universe, the trailer introduces viewers to the beloved characters of Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, and Ben Grimm/The Thing. These roles are portrayed by an all-star cast: Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm.

Unlike the previous Fantastic Four films produced by 20th Century Fox, The Fantastic Four: First Steps picks up with the team already established as superheroes. The four members have already gained their superpowers and are well-known figures within the MCU. This new approach allows the film to focus on their dynamic as a team, rather than their origin stories, which sets it apart from earlier adaptations.

The trailer teases plenty without revealing too much of the plot. However, fans will get a glimpse of the mighty Galactus, portrayed by Ralph Ineson, who appears to stay true to his comic book roots. The trailer closes with an exciting reveal of the Fantastic Four in their classic white and blue costumes, signaling that First Steps could very well be the most comic-accurate Fantastic Four movie to date.

In addition to Galactus, the trailer hints at the presence of John Malkovich in a mysterious role. While Marvel Studios has not officially disclosed his character, there are rumors circulating that Malkovich could be stepping into the role of Ivan Kragoff, aka Red Ghost. This supervillain first appeared in Fantastic Four #13 (1963), leading some to speculate about the nature of the team’s upcoming conflicts. Furthermore, Julia Garner has been officially cast as Shalla-Bal, the Silver Surfer’s ally, and has expressed her excitement about joining the MCU, calling her co-stars “phenomenal” and “wonderful.” She also mentioned how grateful she feels to be a part of such a monumental cinematic universe.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is also set to feature Paul Walter Hauser, Natasha Lyonne, and Sarah Niles in undisclosed roles, keeping the film’s surprises tightly under wraps.

While the trailer confirms that Galactus will be the primary antagonist, other plot details are still shrouded in mystery. Joseph Quinn, who plays Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, has shared that he found the film’s script to be “compelling” and “brilliant,” heightening anticipation for what’s to come. Director Matt Shakman, who helms the film, has discussed the 1960s setting, revealing that the era’s space race and themes of exploration will play a significant role in the film’s narrative. This “retro-future” setting will offer a unique perspective on the Fantastic Four, bringing a fresh take on their stories.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be the third and final MCU film of 2025, scheduled to hit theaters after Thunderbolts and Captain America: Brave New World. While the latter two films will focus on more grounded stories within the sacred timeline, First Steps will connect to the overarching Multiverse saga, setting it apart as a key entry in Marvel’s Phase 5. There have even been rumors suggesting Robert Downey Jr. might make an appearance as Doctor Doom, which would pave the way for his major role in the upcoming Avengers sequels, Doomsday and Secret Wars. If true, this would mark an exciting return for Downey in the MCU, following his iconic portrayal of Iron Man.

After First Steps, Pascal, Kirby, Quinn, and Moss-Bachrach are expected to reprise their roles as Marvel’s First Family in Avengers: Doomsday, set to begin filming in March 2025. This film, which is slated for release in 2026, will once again be directed by the Russo brothers, Joe and Anthony Russo, who previously worked on major MCU hits like Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.

With The Fantastic Four: First Steps set to make waves in 2025, fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe can expect a thrilling, action-packed adventure that will introduce a new chapter for the iconic superhero team while staying true to their comic book roots.
