Collins records 2 touchdown receptions as the Houston Texans force 4 turnovers to secure a 20-12 victory over the Miami Dolphins

Houston Texans’ cornerback Derek Stingley delivered an exceptional performance on Sunday, taking on the challenge of shadowing Miami’s top receiver, Tyreek Hill, for much of the game. Stingley played a pivotal role in the Texans’ dominant 20-12 victory over the Miami Dolphins, helping the defense force four turnovers. His highlight reel included two crucial fourth-quarter interceptions, with one being a key play late in the game that sealed the win for Houston.

“Stingley is playing just unbelievable football right now,” said Houston head coach DeMeco Ryans, praising his standout cornerback.

This victory not only extended the Texans’ win streak but also secured them the AFC South title for the second consecutive year, as they finished at 9-5. The division title was officially clinched when the Denver Broncos defeated the Indianapolis Colts 31-13 later in the day, securing Houston’s playoff spot.

Stingley’s impressive showing against Hill, who was limited to just two receptions for 36 yards, was a key factor in the game. Reflecting on the challenge of covering one of the NFL’s most dynamic playmakers, Stingley remarked, “It’s a good opportunity going against somebody that’s the face of the NFL. So anytime you get to go out there on the field, it’s just a good time, just time to have fun.”

Offensively, Nico Collins was a major contributor to the win, recording two touchdown receptions. Collins hauled in a 6-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter and added another 6-yard scoring grab in the third. The latter touchdown came after a remarkable 35-yard run by Dare Ogunbowale on a fake punt, which set up the scoring opportunity. Miami fought back with a 7-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to tight end Jonnu Smith, but the Dolphins’ extra point attempt was no good, leaving the score at 20-12 with just over a quarter remaining.

With the Dolphins making a push to get back into the game, Stingley delivered a game-changing play with 10:30 left on the clock. He intercepted a pass from Tagovailoa intended for Hill at the Houston 20-yard line, halting the Dolphins’ momentum. After the Texans’ offense failed to convert on two subsequent drives, Stingley once again stepped up to seal the win. With Miami threatening to score in the final minutes, Stingley intercepted another pass, this time aimed at Hill, effectively ending any hopes of a comeback.

“Defensively, our guys stepped up and did a really good job of closing out the game the way we needed to,” Coach Ryans commented after the victory.

Houston quarterback C.J. Stroud was full of praise for Stingley, recognizing his extraordinary skills and joking about the possibility of getting him involved on offense. “He’s one of a kind. Trying to get him a play on offense one of these days. I think he’s that good with the ball in his hands.” Stroud himself had a solid performance, throwing for 131 yards and two touchdowns, while Miami’s offense struggled throughout the game. Dolphins running back Joe Mixon was held to just 23 yards on 12 carries after taking a heavy hit early in the contest.

Tagovailoa, meanwhile, endured a tough outing, losing a fumble and throwing three interceptions. “Plain and simple, my fault,” he admitted. “I’ve got to protect the ball. I’ve got to play better for our guys, especially when the team is counting on me to drive the offense.”

The game also saw a disturbing moment in the third quarter when Miami receiver Grant DuBose was taken off the field on a stretcher after a helmet-to-helmet hit. DuBose was later reported to be in stable condition and was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation. The hit occurred when rookie safety Calen Bullock delivered a blow to DuBose’s head while the receiver attempted to make a catch. Bullock was penalized for unnecessary roughness, but the focus was on DuBose’s health as medical staff attended to him for several minutes before he was taken off the field.

In addition to DuBose’s injury, Miami also suffered a setback when wide receiver Jaylen Waddle sustained a knee injury in the second quarter and did not return. Houston also dealt with injuries, as tight end Cade Stover missed the game after undergoing an emergency appendectomy the night before, and defensive tackle Foley Fatukasi suffered an ankle injury during the second quarter, forcing him to exit the game.

Overall, the Houston Texans’ dominant defensive performance, highlighted by Derek Stingley’s two key interceptions, along with Nico Collins’ two touchdowns, helped propel the team to victory and secure the AFC South title.
