Despite my historical disinterest in Sonic the Hedgehog as a character, I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of excitement for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Here’s a fun tidbit about me: when I first went to see the original Sonic the Hedgehog film, I was all set to tear it apart for being dreadful. After all, who could forget the infamous “Ugly Sonic” controversy? But to my surprise, the movie turned out to be one of my favorite films of 2020. Sure, Jim Carrey stole the show, but there’s more to it than that. Now, with the release of the new trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, my anticipation has reached new heights!

Even though I’m not a huge fan of Sonic as a character and I don’t particularly enjoy the games, the inclusion of Gerald Robotnik has me intrigued—this is a deep cut that only true Sonic enthusiasts will appreciate. And let’s not forget about Shadow—seeing him back on screen is always a joy. Watching the clash between Sonic and Shadow in the previous movies really took me back to my childhood, and I’m not afraid to admit it. Everything we’ve seen from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 so far suggests that it might just be the best installment in the trilogy yet.

Let’s break it down a bit: the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie was genuinely outstanding. It delivered much more than I expected, offering a fun, heartfelt adventure with great performances and solid visuals. The second movie, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, was enjoyable but didn’t quite reach the same highs as the first. It was still a fun ride, and I appreciated the larger scope, but there was something special about the first one that couldn’t be replicated.

Now, all signs point to Sonic the Hedgehog 3 being the standout of the trilogy. Everything from the trailers to the character reveals has me counting down the days until its release. Mark your calendars for December 20, 2024—I’ll be in the theater on opening day, no doubt about it! I’m even prepared to elbow my way past kids to secure a prime seat for this one.

But here’s the twist: after Sonic the Hedgehog 3, I really want the franchise to get more adventurous with the lore. Imagine this for a post-credits scene: a chaotic bank robbery unfolds with people running for their lives, panic in the air. As the walls crumble, three mysterious figures emerge from the debris. The lead figure pulls off a balaclava, revealing none other than Vector the Crocodile—holding one of those massive, comically oversized money bags you only see in old-school cartoons! Behind him, we see a hesitant Charmy the Bee and the ever-cool Espio the Chameleon (yes, I had to fact-check that, but it’s true—Espio is a chameleon!). They’re on a heist, and Sonic and his team are tasked with stopping their crime spree.

It’s a somewhat smaller-scale Sonic movie I’d watch in an instant, without question. I know, I know—this sounds crazy, especially since I claim to dislike the Sonic franchise. But despite my protests, I’m well-versed in the Sonic universe. I know Vector, Espio, Charmy, Big the Cat, Silver, Cream, and Cheese, and many more characters. But hey, I’ll stick to my guns: I still don’t like the IP… even though I clearly know more about it than I let on.

In conclusion, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is shaping up to be a must-see movie, and I’m genuinely excited about where the franchise is headed. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of Sonic or someone who’s just along for the ride, there’s no denying that this film is going to be a blast. Keep an eye out for it, because Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is sure to be one of the most thrilling cinematic experiences of 2024!
