Will the Browns Re-Sign Jameis Winston? Examining His Future in Cleveland

Jameis Winston delivered a standout performance in the Cleveland Browns’ crucial Thursday Night Football victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, igniting speculation about his future with the team. In a snow-filled November 21 matchup, Winston led the Browns to a 24-19 win, completing 18 of 27 passes for 219 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. With starting quarterback Deshaun Watson sidelined by a torn Achilles, Winston has stepped up, securing a 2-2 record as Cleveland’s interim starter.

Now, the big question looms: Could Winston become a long-term fixture for the Browns?

Winston’s Impact and Performance as a Starter
After being thrust into the starting role following Watson’s injury against the Bengals, Winston has thrown for 1,266 yards, seven touchdowns, and four interceptions in four starts. His leadership and ability to adapt under pressure have impressed fans and analysts alike, especially in critical divisional matchups like the win over Pittsburgh. However, as the 30-year-old nears the end of his one-year, $4 million contract, the Browns face a decision about his future.

A Strong Case for Continuity
Akron Beacon-Journal beat writer Chris Easterling weighed in on Winston’s future during a November 24 appearance on 92.3 The Fan. Easterling suggested that re-signing Winston could provide much-needed stability for the Browns as Watson recovers, particularly given the uncertainty surrounding Watson’s readiness for the start of the 2025 season.

“I certainly think they should consider him,” Easterling said. “Obviously, it’ll come down to finances. The Browns have a tricky cap situation with several key players and dead money on the books. But if they can make the numbers work, I absolutely believe bringing Winston back would be a smart move.”

Easterling also emphasized how Winston’s return could eliminate unnecessary variables. “If you bring back Winston, you essentially retain the quarterback group from this year, but with Winston leading while Watson rehabs. It provides a sense of continuity at the league’s most important position, which is invaluable.”

What’s Next for Cleveland’s QB Room?
If the Browns re-sign Winston, he would likely compete with Watson for the starting role once Watson is fully recovered. However, Cleveland has other options on the roster. Dorian Thompson-Robinson, a fifth-round pick in 2023, remains a developmental prospect. Additionally, Bailey Zappe, a former Patriots starter who joined the Browns midseason, could offer further depth.

Still, Easterling believes Winston is the logical short-term answer, particularly with Watson’s status in limbo. “You have to focus on solidifying the top of the depth chart,” he explained. “If the Browns can make Winston’s contract work financially, it addresses that concern effectively.”

The Financial and Draft Landscape
Cleveland’s tight salary cap situation could complicate negotiations. Watson’s five-year, $230 million fully guaranteed contract looms large, particularly with his injury casting doubt on his future performance. While Winston would likely command a modest deal, balancing the budget remains a challenge.

The Browns may also explore other avenues to secure their quarterback position. Some analysts suggest Cleveland could target a top QB in the 2025 NFL Draft. CBS Sports analyst Josh Edwards recently predicted the Browns selecting Miami Hurricanes quarterback Cam Ward with the third overall pick. Edwards wrote, “Cleveland is in disarray. If they don’t secure a top prospect, they might revert to a low-cost veteran like Joe Flacco or Jameis Winston. However, it’s tough to justify starting anyone other than Watson, given his contract.”

Speculation Around Free Agency
In addition to Winston, the Browns have been linked to other veteran quarterbacks, including former New York Giants starter Daniel Jones. However, when asked about Jones, head coach Kevin Stefanski sidestepped the topic, saying, “Respectfully, I’m not going to get into that.”

Why Re-Signing Winston Makes Sense
With Watson’s recovery timeline uncertain and his struggles prior to the injury raising concerns, re-signing Winston could give the Browns a reliable option to bridge the gap in 2025. Beyond his on-field performance, Winston’s return would provide much-needed continuity at quarterback, a position where Cleveland has historically struggled to find long-term stability.

As offseason decisions loom, the Browns must carefully weigh their options. Whether they invest in Winston, pursue another veteran, or gamble on a rookie, the team’s approach to the quarterback position will be critical to their success moving forward. For now, Winston has made a compelling case to remain a key part of Cleveland’s future.
