Watch out, bad guys and even worse villains—the MCU is introducing a new team of misfits in 2025. After months of hints during the summer convention circuit, Marvel has unveiled the first official trailer for its upcoming film, Thunderbolts—and yes, that mysterious asterisk is still unexplained. The trailer showcases an unexpected mix of rogues embarking on a perilous new mission. It appears to be the same footage presented to fans in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this year, featuring Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) as she encounters a lineup of Marvel’s infamous characters, including John Walker/US Agent from Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Ghost from Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Taskmaster from Black Widow. Initially, it seems they are targeting some of the MCU’s most notorious shadow operatives, only to end up collaborating under the direction of Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Bucky Barnes also lends a hand, though his assistance is questionable, as he appears to try to eliminate them several times in the trailer. Check it out!
There’s a lot of excitement in the mix, largely thanks to the addition of Yelena’s fellow Black Widow ally, David Harbour’s Red Guardian. We also get some intriguing glimpses of Thunderbolts’ biggest mystery so far. This mystery revolves around Lewis Pullman’s character, introduced during a chaotic meeting between Yelena, Walker, Ghost, and Taskmaster as “Bob.” Later, we see him seemingly deflecting a squadron’s gunfire with his bare skin. It turns out “Bob” is actually Robbie Reynolds, a.k.a. The Sentry, a character inspired by Marvel Comics’ own version of Superman. He wields a super-soldier-like serum that grants him incredible power, often described as the strength of a million exploding suns. Ouch!
Directed by Jake Schreier, the film stars Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost, Wyatt Russell as John Walker/US Agent, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster, Lewis Pullman as The Sentry, and Harrison Ford as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, the Red Hulk and occasional President of the United States. Here’s a new poster featuring some of these characters to hold you over! We’ll discover how The Sentry fits into Fontaine’s quirky team and more when Thunderbolts hits theaters in May 2025.
