Donald Trump directed fresh criticism at pop star Taylor Swift after she publicly supported VP Kamala Harris for president.
“I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!” Trump declared in a Sunday morning post on Truth Social, using his characteristic all-caps style, without offering further explanation.
Liz Cheney, the Republican former congresswoman who supports Harris, responded to Trump on X (formerly Twitter). Quoting his comment, she wrote, “Says the smallest man who ever lived,” alluding to a song from Swift’s latest album, “The Tortured Poets Department.”
Ana Navarro, the GOP strategist and outspoken Trump critic, posted on X, “Donald Trump has completely lost what little sanity he had. Taylor Swift was the one to break him.”
Last week, Taylor Swift shared on Instagram that she plans to vote for Democrat Kamala Harris in the U.S. presidential election, following Harris’ decisive debate win over Trump on September 10. Swift’s Instagram Story included a link to the U.S. government’s Vote.gov site, resulting in over 400,000 visits to the voter-information page within 24 hours. “I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them,” Swift stated in her post. “I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader, and I believe we can achieve much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos.”
Swift also criticized Trump for previously using a fake, AI-generated image of her, falsely making it seem like she endorsed him. In an interview with Fox Business, Trump indicated he wasn’t worried about Swift suing him over the fake images, saying they “were all made up by other people.”
Trump once showed admiration for Taylor Swift, at least for her looks. “I think she’s beautiful — very beautiful! I find her very beautiful. I think she’s liberal. She probably doesn’t like Trump. I hear she’s very talented,” he said to Variety co-editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh in the book Apprentice in Wonderland: How Donald Trump and Mark Burnett Took America Through the Looking Glass. After Swift publicly endorsed Kamala Harris, Trump stated, “I was not a Taylor Swift fan” and suggested, “she’ll probably pay a price for it in the marketplace.” On a call to Fox News’ “Fox & Friends,” the former president instead praised Brittany Mahomes, wife of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Patrick, a friend and teammate of Swift’s boyfriend, Travis Kelce, was recently seen with Swift and Brittany Mahomes, who were photographed hugging at the U.S. Open tennis tournament in New York earlier this month.
When questioned about Taylor Swift’s endorsement of Kamala Harris, Trump responded, “Well, I actually like Mrs. Mahomes much better, if you want to know the truth. She’s a big Trump fan. I was not a Taylor Swift fan.” He continued, “It was only a matter of time. You couldn’t possibly endorse Biden. But she’s a very liberal person. She seems to always endorse a Democrat, and she’ll probably pay a price for it in the marketplace.” He added, “But I like Brittany. Brittany is great. She’s the one I like much better than Taylor Swift. Wife of the great quarterback. I think she’s terrific.”
